Favorite Vacation, Even with a Stomach Bug.

Today I'm linking up with Momfessionals for some Show and Tell Tuesdays, today's topic being your favorite vacation ever. Mine is interesting, it was cut way short and we both got super sick, but that 1 perfect day is now my favorite vacation ever. I'm sharing a few other past faves below as well...

Last spring, Dustin and I set off for a road trip out west. The plan? A couple days exploring the Grand Canyon and then head to California where we had a room booked in the Sequoia National Forest.

The road trip itself was fun! Not the first time we've traveled from Oklahoma to Arizona, we just love the drive and all the different changes of scenery. We spent the night in Amarillo then hit the road the next morning to finish the up trip. We stopped and visited the meteor crater near Winslow just for fun.

Day 1 at the canyon was absolute perfection. The weather, the sky, the beauty that is God's creation. It was truly the best day ever, not 1 thing could have made that day any better.

We really went with no plan, we just wanted to wing it and explore. We found ourselves wishing we'd planned a little to hike but we quickly found a trail down that we thought we could do, being unprepared. It was so amazing. A little scary a couple of times, narrow paths straight down, but it was so neat. It took a couple hours to get down to where we were headed. We sat down there for a little bit and took it all in. Absolutely stunning.

That night, we went back to the hotel room and Dustin started feeling like he might be getting sick. It was all down hill from there. The next day we went out there for a little bit but he was just sick and weak, so it didn't last long. The following morning we were supposed to continue west to California but out of nowhere it hit me, and it was a lot worse than what he had! I'll spare you details, and we still have no idea what happened, but it was either the stomach flu or food poisoning. It was awful, to be in a hotel room then in a car while being that sick. We had to cancel the rest of the trip and headed back east. Luckily the lodge in CA refunded our money even though it was last minute.

I know it's totally crazy that a trip could end so bad and yet be my favorite? But the Grand Canyon was so unbelievably gorgeous and the weather was so perfect, that the 1 day we spent there is truly my all time favorite. We've been together for 9 years and we've traveled a lot, if you've never made it there, you must

A few other favorite vacations throughout the years?

A super fun trip to Cancun with our best friends.

A trip to Glenwood Springs Colorado with my in-laws. I tried skiing for the first time (fail!) and we enjoyed the gorgeous scenery and hot springs.

A long weekend in Chicago with Kristal. I absolutely loved Chicago and the fun few days we spent together. Laughing, exploring, shopping and enjoying RPM.

What was your favorite vacation?
Have you ever had a vacation end badly?

  8. The Grand Canyon is so amazing! I seriously am in awe every time I see it. Everything out west is so pretty. I feel like the sky is bluer and the trees are greener. I don't know what it is! It sucks your trip was cut short, especially from being sick, but it still looks like you guys made the best of it!

  9. I remember I found your blog through your Chicago trip!! :) Such a bummer that your trip had to end the way it did but sounds like you made the most out of the couple of days you were feeling well! And that just means you'll have to go back and visit the spots you missed in the future, right?!

  10. All your photos are so gorgeous! Honestly, when trips end like yours did, sometimes that's what makes them so memorable. And, like you said, you had one gorgeous, perfect day! That's all you really can ask for in the end. To this day, my favorite vacation was the one I took with my parents the month before I left for college - we went to California and started the first half of the 10-day trip in L.A., and we toured all the movie studios. It was a dream come true for a movie fanatic like me! :)

  14. Awwww, being sick and not near your bed is awful. I think it is nice though that you didn't let it color your whole trip and still have great memories from the day before.

  17. All of these photos are seriously giving me the travel bug. I went to see the Grand Canyon with my parents when I was super small, but I'd love to make it back there someday! I had a sort of similar experience when I went to Paris and London when I was in high school - the last day I came down with some sort of awful flu and I couldn't go to the Louvre which was disappointing. They almost didn't let me on the plane the next morning, but thankfully I made it home safe and it's still one of my favourite vacations because it was my first time in Europe!

  21. Chicago is on my bucket list and of course I would have to eat at RPM and pray I would run into Giuliana. My favorite trip is definitely the weekend I spent in London during my study abroad trip. I hate your vacation got cut short, but at least you got a day to fully enjoy one of God's many glorious creations!

  24. Those pictures are absolutely gorgeous!!!! That one day sounds so perfect! That is just awful how it ended, but it sounds like that first day was so awesome that it made up for the days you missed. My favorite vacations have been to Gulf Shores, Alabama. I went once just me and my mom in college and my husband's family has a condo down there and we go down every summer with his sister and her family. I just love our time down there.

Boo for having gotten sick right after day 1, but I'm glad you were able to at least enjoy the one day y'all got! You both are troopers. Chicago is also one of my favorite vacation spots. I love big cities and there is SO much to do there!

  29. Ugh, it sucks it ended so yucky - but it's awesome you got to experience it even if it was only for a short time. We've flown over it, and from the airplane I was in awe on how gorgeous it was! Loved your pics xo
